The Creative Manager of Sky Organics, a company specializing in organic personal care products, reached out to us seeking 3D rendering assistance for their entire product line during a rebranding of their packaging. Previously having utilized traditional photography for their DTC and eCommerce needs, rebranding presented a new opportunity for them to explore 3D rendering as an easier and more beneficial way to produce their hero package imagery. The initial scope of work consisted of creating high-quality 3D renderingsfor over 50 SKU's.
Before we can dive into a project like this it's important that we get organized, gather reference, and discuss all the details with theclient to ensure we are on the same page. While technically that applies to every project, it's of even greater importance the larger the project. Below are some of the early details we discussed and gathered.
From a scope of work standpoint, the initial phase consistedof 24 unique package structures (boxes, bottles, containers, bags, etc.) across 51 SKU's and a total of 161 renderings taking into account multiple angles per SKU. All of this was detailed and clearly organized in a google doc for review and approval prior to getting started.
After we had everything organized and greenlit by the client, we selected a handful of products to start with based on how different they were from one another. Essentially choosing one SKU for each structure (box, bottle, and bag). This allowed the client to provide early feedback that would apply across the entire product line and for us to ensure we were heading in the right direction since much of what we were establishing would apply to the other products. Each package was first carefully modeled and textured based on the die line artwork files and measurements from the physical samples that were provided. Then our artists staged the cameras and lighting and produced the first round of photorealistic renderings that were ready for review.
Once we had some initial approvals and knew we were on the right track we shifted focus toward modeling all of the remaining unique package structures. These designs were similar enough to the initial renders that we were able to build upon details that had already been established such as camera angles, materials, and an overall lighting style. Perhaps the longest phase of production given the scope of over 20 unique structures, but ultimately there were no major issues given the success of the initial renders.
The final phase of production involved rendering all of the remaining "label updates" or what we refer to as a rendering of an existing package structure where we are ONLY updating the label artwork. More than half of the SKU's were considered "label updates", but thanks to the benefits of 3D rendering, we were able to complete these in just a fraction of the total project time and budget building off of all of the renders that had previously been set up and approved. During this phase, all of the ambiguity and stylistic questions have been solved and it's mostly just repeating the formula that had been established.
After the success of the initial batch of products, we continued to work with Sky Organics on many more renders in the following months as new packaging and products were developed and expansion into other markets outside of the US required additional work. This was not our first rebrand, but it was one of our favorites. The style and simplicity of the new artwork combined with the variability of the package structures presented some really fun and interesting designs that we really enjoyed working on.
